Corten steel, named after 'COR-rosion resistance' and 'TEN-sile strength', is a naturally weathered steel material that oxidizes to a striking rusted finish over time. This patina protects the structural integrity of the piece without affecting its strength. Architects and designers are drawn to Corten steel because of its vibrant colour and unique texture. It adds a modern and rustic look to any environment.
Corten steel will naturally develop a patina with outdoor exposure to moisture over time, but to accelerate the development of the rusted coating, spray down all exposed steel with this solution:
16 oz of hydrogen peroxide
2 oz of white vinegar
½ tablespoon of salt
We suggest performing the spray over a disposable surface such as cardboard or plastic to prevent dripping rust from staining. Ensure you do not spray any plants you may have nearby.
Yes. While the desired effect of oxidization will increase the beauty of our products, it is also capable of staining wood, stone, and concrete over time. We advise on proper installation to prevent this.
Corten steel does deteriorate over time, but that's exactly when the magic happens. Unlike wood planters that rot, Corten develops a protective rusted patina when exposed to moisture. This patina forms naturally within months to a few years and acts like a shield, slowing further corrosion significantly. While the finish may darken or evolve with weather, the steel will live on for decades — far outlasting untreated materials — without losing the strength it had on day one.
Both mild and Corten steel bring unique advantages to your landscaping, and we're happy to offer both. Mild steel is a fantastic, budget-friendly option, though it benefits from protective coatings such as galvanizing, paint, or clear coating to keep rust at bay in outdoor settings. Corten steel, however, takes it up a notch — engineered to rust intentionally, forming a stunning, natural patina that seals it against further corrosion. That means a bold, rustic aesthetic and a lifespan stretching decades — no maintenance required. If you have concerns about which material would best suit your project, we are happy to discuss it with you.
Absolutely. Send us a message and we will provide you with an estimate to customize any of our standard products to suit your needs.
We love to work with you to bring your vision to life. Our strength lies in our ability to design and fabricate your Corten steel products. We do not offer on-site installation. Installation is best handled by your landscape or construction professionals.
While it is no secret that we are big fans of rust, Staaltec does offer a powder coated or galvanized finish on our steel products. Contact us for more information on this process.
